Maricopa County Regional School District, in partnership with Southwest Key Program, operates the Southwest Key Transitional Learning Center (SWKTLC) at two Maricopa County sites, one in Phoenix and one in Glendale. Southwest Key TLC is a non-traditional closed-campus K-12 school.
Upon school entry, students with a primary home language other than English (PHLOTE) take the Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA) to determine their eligibility for English Language Learner (ELL) status, and to determine their language proficiency levels. Students identified as ELLs have the opportunity to earn elective high school credits in English Language Development (ELD) courses. Students who are English proficient are enrolled in Skills Enhancement or A+ny Where Learning System a computer based curriculum.
All students are also enrolled in a Transition class. Students learn about different careers, how to complete job applications, and build resumes. They also learn about life skills through Merging Two Worlds and Character Counts curriculum. Students complete an Education and Career Action Plan (ECAP) with their teachers that allow them to adapt instruction to the educational and career aspirations of their students.
Southwest Key has a student council that meets on a weekly basis. The council offers students the opportunity to make and implement decisions, participate in community projects, and share responsibility. The council plans extracurricular activities, including community service projects, holiday celebrations and events, and field trips.
In addition to school curriculum, students learn valuable life skills which will benefit them beyond their enrollment with SWKTLC.
