Maricopa County Regional School District has a partnership with Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development. MCRSD operates the Tumbleweed Transitional Learning Center located at 1950 W. Heatherbrea. Students enrolled at Tumbleweed TLC have the opportunity to earn high school credit towards their diploma in a non-traditional classroom setting through the Maricopa County Regional School District. In addition, Tumbleweed offers General Education Equivalent Diploma (GED) preparation classes. A student’s program is determined by their ECAP (Education and Career Action Plan). Remediation (skills) classes are provided on an as needed basis. Education programming includes the A+ Learning System computerized program to help the students recover their credits in a timely manner. High school students who have not passed the AIMS test are placed in AIMS prep classes.
All students are also placed in a Transition class. Students learn about different careers, learn how to fill out applications and build resumes, and learn about life skills. Curriculum also includes Merging Two Worlds and Character Counts. Teacher and student meet on the first day of class to fill out an Education and Career Action Plan (ECAP). Students are given access to AzCIS which is designed to provide educational, career, and occupational information to help students in making better-informed career and school choices. Tumbleweed also provides computer and internet access for educational and job search purposes.
Tumbleweed has a youth advisory board which is similar to student council. The advisory board is run using the youth development model. This model encourages young people (in partnership with adults) to make and implement decisions and share responsibility for outcomes. The youth advisory board does community service work, plans fundraisers, events and field trips. The students meet after school three to four times a month.
Students who are identified as homeless receive bus passes to help them get to and from school. We also supply all schools supplies to help eliminate any barriers that may keep them from school. Homeless students can also be referred to one of Tumbleweed’s career specialists.
Upon exiting Tumbleweed, all students are monitored and tracked at 30, 60, and 90 days. This enables the teachers to see if the students are in need of any type of service and are continuing with their positive affiliations.
