Groupthink

Are you from a small town? Part of a church? Part of an organization/club?

If so, you may notice that most of the people in that town, church, or organization nod their heads at what you nod your head at. Like what you like. Dislike what you dislike. Have similar political signs in their yards. Agree on what is or is not "God's will." Choose to invest in the same causes or activities.

No doubt, you have been or are a part of something like that. I have. I am. After all, most of us do not choose to hang out with people that "fundamentally disagree" with us very often. It's not fun. It can be isolating.

Living in a small town, attending a church congregation, or being a member of an organization or club is not a bad thing. Not at all! There is comfort and safety in it. There is community. There is strength and support of conviction.

But when we organize ourselves like that when trying to do good work for people (let's call those people the kids of Durango, Esperanza, and Hope) that wouldn't otherwise be part of our groups, we aren't necessarily serving them or our creative selves well.

Be careful with groupthinkTheir truth doesn't have to be your truth. And it most likely isn't our kid's truth.
